World Cup Betting Lines – France vs Ecuador
World Cup Betting Lines at Chinese Bookie
By Charles Jay
One never knows what a team is going to do when it has already clinched a berth in the elimination round. So it is with those questions that World Cup bettors must enter into handicapping a match between France and Ecuador, which takes place in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday at 4 PM ET.
The French team has looked awesome thus far, blowing by its two opponents by a total of six goals (Honduras 3-0 and Switzerland 5-2). They are headed to the elimination round. Everything else is yet to be determined. Ecuador can assure itself of a spot in the Round of 16 with a victory. Anything else and they are taking their chances. The organizers of the event don’t necessarily like teams knowing the result of how the others in their group did, so this game will be taking place simultaneously with the match between Switzerland and Honduras, which takes place in the middle of the Amazon jungle, an area so remote that we are not sure that modern communications has actually come to the area.
In the World Cup betting lines that have been placed on this game at Chinese Bookie, it appears as if the oddsmakers have a lot of faith that they will see a big effort out of France:
The World Cup Championship

France -1/2, -145
Ecuador +1/2, +130
Betting Odds – Moneyline:

Under 2.5 Goals +121
There is indeed likely an issue as to whether Didier Deschamps, the coach of the French team, will make the move to rest some of his key people for some or all of this match. France has been explosive thus far, but one of those games came against a Honduras side that has scored once in their last five World Cup games, and a Swiss team that was probably overrated to a considerable extent coming into the tournament. Indeed, even though Switzerland was rated #8 in the world by FIFA, it was France that was the favorite to win Group E, priced at -145 at Chinese Bookie.
World Cup bettors can sense that the absence of Franck Ribery, one of the elite players in the world (out with a back injury), is going to catch up to the French side sooner or later, although they may not feel it here. Then again, if they are resting any players, depth may become a factor. Deschamps isn’t complaining, because frankly, he didn’t know exactly what to expect from his squad. He is happy that there is a better mood around the camp; a lot of soccer bettors remember that four years ago, there was an ugly incident where Nicolas Anelka had a locker room dispute with team manager Raymond Domenech and was thrown off the team, after which all the players staged a boycott. They did eventually play, but got beat by South Africa, and the whole World Cup team was later excluded from a friendly against Norway.
What a difference four years make. Well, except Ribery won’t accept cortisone shots from the team doctor. We’re sure that did not go over well with everybody.
Ecuador (+426 in the moneyline at Chinese Bookie) has had to endure an ugly incident of its own, as the popular striker, Christian “Chucho” Benitez, who had been a vital cog during qualifying, fell dead of cardiac arrest after a club match in Qatar. Felipe Caicedo, who tallied seven goals in qualifying, has taken his place and his number and is playing this event in his friend’s honor. The big gun in this group phase, however, has been Enner Valencia, who has scored al three of this team’s goals. Another Valencia – Antonio, who is no relation – is a veteran member of Manchester United, and Christian Noboa’s playmaking ability is something for France to think about. Coach Reinaldo Rueda (who previously mentored the Honduran team) is looking to stretch the French defense with some aggressive play from the flanks. In this scenario, which could be a must-win, they will have to pull out al the stops. Will France be too complacent to be ready? That is really the huge question for World Cup bettors to ponder.
