USC Back in Rebound Mode in Visit to High-Flying Washington State

    By Charles Jay

The USC Trojans have to once again pull themselves up off the floor and get back to business as they take on the Washington State Cougars in football betting action that is set to begin in Pullman, WA at 4:30 PM ET on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans were heart-broken on their trip to Utah last weekend when the nationally-ranked Utes beat them on a touchdown with just eight seconds left in the game.

Chinese Bookie patrons have seen that USC has become used to these last-second disappointments, especially as they were victimized in the final moments by Arizona State in a Hail Mary and then had to come right back the next week and play at Arizona. They did not cover the football pointspread in that contest as a road favorite, but they did manage a straight-up win, so they should be able to be able to handle this situation from a psychological standpoint.

They will face off against a Washington State squad that almost exclusively throws the football, and has a very confident quarterback in Connor Halliday. This will be as big a test for USC’s secondary as they will likely face.

In the football betting odds that have been posted on this game by the people at Chinese Bookie, the Trojans are favored on the road:

    USC Trojans -6.5 (-115)
    Washington State Cougars +6.5 (-105)

    Over 64.5 points -110
    Under 64.5 points -110

Last year’s game between these two was very strange, considering the offensive capabilities they both possess. They combined for just 415 yards in a 10-7 Washington State win.

The Cougars have not rushed for more than 78 yards in any game this season, Halliday tries his best to make up for it in Mike Leach’s “Air Raid” offense, as he has already thrown for 3833 yards. And he has been throwing the ball more and more; over the last three games, he has attempted 218 passes, completing 147 of them. His team has lost all three of those games, which may not be a coincidence. But in terms of passing yards, he is more than 900 yards ahead of the next youngster on the list, Blake Frohnapfel of UMass.

That is not to say that USC’s defense is the only one that will be challenged. NCAA football bettors know that Cody Kessler was very talented, but he has been able to move to a different level, it seems, under the tutelage of Steve Sarkisian. Last season he was thrust into a two-way quarterback duel several games into the season with Max Wittek, and finally emerged as the starter, in a derby that probably was not good for the team and quite possibly was one of the factors leading to the firing of Lane Kiffin. Kessler threw for 264 yards last Saturday, and his ratio of touchdowns to interceptions has been outstanding (20-2).

Chinese Bookie customers have not gotten rich betting on USC when they are the visitor; in fact, the Trojans have covered just three of their last 15 road games. At the same time, if Wazzu is losing for some opportunities to work on a shot field, they had better create those chances themselves; USC has committed just seven turnovers, while WSU has forced just six of them.
