Vikings Want Some Redemption vs. Seahawks

The Minnesota Vikings have made quite a bit of progress in the second season under the tutelage of Mike Zimmer, who is much more involved in the defensive side of things than the offensive game plan. The formula for this club has been to play a solid game on the stop end and turn Adrian Peterson loose. That has worked well enough for this team to overtake the Green Bay Packers for the NFC North championship. On Sunday afternoon, they will stay at home, as they meet the Seattle Seahawks in a game that begins at 1:05 PM ET. The Vikings not only posted an 11-5 straight-up record, they were also the most profitable team in the NFL from the perspective of beating the number, registering a 13-3 mark against the football pointspread. Some of that had to do with exceeded what may have been the expectations that were put before them, but the team also played a rather weak schedule, posting two wins over playoff teams – one of which came against a Kansas City squad that was in the midst of going 1-5 in the first six games. When they had to come up with a road win with the division title on the line, they did, beating the Packers at Lambeau Field last week. Their reward was a home game in the Wild Card round, but one that comes against a team that “cleaned its clock” at TCF Bank Stadium a little over a month ago. The Seahawks beat them so badly that it was scary.

When these teams met on December 6, the Vikes were a couple of weeks off a pasting they took at the hands of the Packers in Minneapolis, so there were some questions as to whether they were “ready for prime time.” And against Seattle, they most definitely were not, as they managed only 125 yards in a 38-7 defeat. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was throttled, suffering four sacks and passing for only 117 yards. Adrian Peterson, whose 1485 yards were good enough to win the NFL rushing title, got only 18 of those (on eight carries) against the Seahawks’ front.

What the Vikings need to do is put themselves in a set of circumstances where they can afford to hand the ball to Peterson some more. Obviously they were playing from behind, as Russell Wilson, the hottest quarterback in the league down the stretch, had 274 yards and three TD’s. How little offense did Minnesota generate? Well, their only score came on a kickoff return by Cordarelle Peterson.

Chinese Bookie patrons may not have all the confidence in the world in Bridgewater, who is athletic and smart but perhaps not ready to lead a team to a conference title. After twelve games of the season, he had only eight touchdown passes. It has only been a recent “hot streak” that has left him with a ratio of 14 TD passes to nine interceptions.

But who does Bridgewater throw to against this Seattle defense? His best pass-catcher this season was Stefon Diggs, a rookie who was drafted in the fifth round and emerged with 52 receptions. Kyle Rudolph (495 yards) was a serviceable tight end, but Mike Wallace, who was acquired in the off-season to provide a downfield threat, was disappointing, to say the least. Wallace, who had his problems connecting with Ryan Tannehill in Miami, had had only 181 TOTAL receiving yards over his last ten games.

The key to success here is going to be getting something beneficial from Peterson on first down. This was a factor that obviously helped the Vikings in the regular season, as they were forced into a three-and-out only 15.7% of the time. But in the last seven games they have played, the Seahawks allowed a total of 401 rushing yards. This will be a tough nut to crack indeed.
