NBA Finals Betting – Heat Now Desperate to Stay Alive as They Meet Spurs in Game 5
By Charles Jay
Well, Chinese Bookie customers certainly know that the Miami Heat have a number of championship players, because, after all, they have one the world championship two years in a row. So it is not out of line perhaps to think that they could respond like champions with their backs to the wall. That is unquestionably the position they find themselves in as they stare down elimination on Sunday night. NBA Finals bettors have been aghast at the way Miami has played in its three losses to the San Antonio Spurs, and certainly they must execute a complete reversal if they are to pull off the near-miracle comeback from being down three games to one. Tip-off time for Game 5 is 8 PM ET at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.
Maybe one of the differences here is that there are so many players on the San Antonio side who can do some damage that Miami can’t figure out answers for all of them, while at the same time very little with the Heat can get started without LeBron James. They have come to rely on him so much, which may not have been the expectation when he joined Chris Bosh to form the so-called “Big Three” originally. But he does dominate the ball, and we would expect that he would dominate it further as, for this team, there is no tomorrow.
In the NBA Finals betting odds that have been posted on this contest by the people at Chinese Bookie, the Spurs are clear favorites to get the job done and win the series:
- San Antonio Spurs -6
- MiamI Heat +6
- Over 195.5 Points -110
- Under 195.5 Points -110
With James in the lineup, everyone else with the Heat has taken a secondary role. And some of these players have not been ready for prime time. One of them is Mario Chalmers, the point guard who has been beaten far too many times by the likes of Tony Parker and Patty Mills, whether it is on a drive or with a three-point attempt (Mills hit four out of six from three-point range on Thursday night). Chalmers has also shot just five of 18 in the series.
When NBA finals bettors look at things years from now, this could be seen as the coming-out party for Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio’s small forward who has really been one of the great difference-makers. Leonard, who was a member of the NBA’s All-Defensive team this season, has done a great job making things uncomfortable for both guards and forwards in the Miami lineup, and over the last two games he has scored 48 points. In fact, Chinese Bookie customers saw him really fill up the stat sheet in Game 4, with 20 points, 14 rebounds (five on the offenses and), three assists, three steals and three blocked shots. Can you be any more complete than that? And coach Gregg Popovich has had the luxury of being able to use Boris Diaw off the bench or in a starting role. Diaw’s plus-minus rating of +60 is the best ever over the first four games of an NBA Final series, for as long as they have been keeping the statistic.
Basketball bettors already know that Bosh is an undersized center, but somehow the guys who can throw their muscle around, like Chris Anderson and Udonis Haslem, have been conspicuously absent for most of this series. Meanwhile, San Antonio continues to outscore Miami in the paint; on Thursday night the difference was 46-30. Of course part of that was that the Spurs pulled down a dozen offensive rebounds.
If Chinese Bookie patrons want to really take an honest look at it, the Heat has been outhustled. San Antonio is spreading out the floor on offense and getting to areas the Miami defenders simply can’t get to, and the Heat are not moving the ball around enough on offense. In fact, you take a look at it, San Antonio had the huge edge in assists in Game 4 (25-13), which really illustrates the difference with which these teams have conducted their offense. Have the Heat (and the Big Three) reached the end of the road? Well, Erik Spoelstra says that he is going to closely examine things and make changes as necessary. It might be very tough to get a lineup out there that could handle all the options San Antonio has at its disposal.
